Ruth: Lesson 2 – Naomi Widowed
Ruth: Lesson 2 – Naomi Widowed
When All Hope Seems Lost
Scripture Focus: Ruth 1:1-13 (NASB)
In this deeply moving lesson, Chris Pope walks through the pain and despair of Naomi. She and her husband Elimelech left Bethlehem due to famine and settled in Moab. Then tragedy struck. Elimelech died, and her two sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. After about ten years, both sons also died, leaving Naomi with no husband and no sons.
Chris asks the question we all face in seasons of loss: What do we do when all hope is lost, or when everything fails? Nothing goes right. Naomi felt the weight of this. She told her daughters-in-law to return to their mothers' houses, urging them to go back to Moab because she had nothing left to offer them. She believed that the hand of the Lord had gone out against her.
This lesson does not shy away from the raw pain of grief and loss. It acknowledges that sometimes life does not go according to plan, and we are left with heartbreak and emptiness. Yet even in this dark chapter of Naomi's story, God is still at work. The seeds of redemption are being planted even when all seems lost.

Scripture Focus:
Ruth 1:1-13 (NASB) – "Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife was Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other was Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was left without her two sons and her husband. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the land of Moab, for she had heard in the land of Moab that the Lord had visited His people by giving them food. So she departed from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go, return each of you to your mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me. May the Lord grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband.' Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. But they said to her, 'No, but we will return with you to your people.' Then Naomi said, 'Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go, for I am too old to have a husband. If I said I have hope, if I were even to have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters; for it is much more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has gone forth against me.'"
