Romans: Lesson 18 – Deep Concern
Romans: Lesson 18 – Deep Concern
The Chosen People and a World in Chaos
Scripture Focus: Romans 9:1-5 (NASB)
In this heartfelt and sobering lesson, Chris Pope examines Paul's deep concern for his fellow Israelites. Paul writes with great sorrow and unceasing grief in his heart because his kinsmen according to the flesh, the people of Israel, had rejected their Messiah. They were the chosen people, blessed with adoption as sons and daughters, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the temple service, and the promises. Yet the world was in chaos, and many had stumbled over the stumbling stone.
Chris reflects on the tension we feel today. We are the chosen people of God, called out of darkness into His marvelous light. Yet the world around us is in chaos. How do we respond? Like Paul, we should have a deep concern for those who do not yet know Christ. We should grieve for the lost and be compelled to share the hope we have found. This lesson challenges us to examine our hearts and to allow God to break our hearts for what breaks His.

Scripture Focus:
Romans 9:1-8 (NASB) – "I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons and daughters, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the temple service, and the promises; whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen."
